As we announced to you last week, the latest version of the application is no longer compatible with iOS 9, which means it will no longer work on the iPhone 4s. Indeed, the iPhone 4S is the last iPhone that cannot go beyond iOS 9, which means that as of today, its owners are not more protected against attacks on WhatsApp, and very soon the application will become unusable.

From now on, all WhatsApp users using iPhone must be iOS 10 (released in 2016) or later to use the service, as shown in a new support document on the WhatsApp website. In other words, iOS users will have need iPhone 5 or newer to use the Facebook owned messaging application.

Other Apple devices are also no longer compatible with WhatsApp

Several terminals of the Californian giant cannot install iOS 10, which means that WhatsApp support stops for them as well.. These are iPad 2 and 3, iPad mini 1 and iPod touch 5G. The iPhone 4S are not the only smartphones recently abandoned by the application, since some old Android devices have not been compatible with WhatsApp since the beginning of the year. The smartphones affected are those stuck under Android 4.0.2 (or a previous version).

This change comes with version 2.21.50 of WhatsApp for iPhone, which can be downloaded from the App Store. IPhone 4S and other Apple devices should be able to continue using the app until 1is January 2022. However, by then, affected devices will no longer receive any security updates, which makes the app dangerous to use.

For those users who no longer want to use the app on these devices, it is recommended that you back up your WhatsApp conversations to iCloud and restore your chat history to a newer, supported device. WhatsApp explains the process in detail on a page FAQ dedicated to iCloud backups.
