WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out audio and video calls to the desktop app, which appears to be a very limited release for now.
WhatsApp added audio and video calling to the service in 2015 and 2016 respectively, quickly gaining ground as one of the most popular calling platforms. Unfortunately, these calls were limited to the mobile app only.
Fortunately, WABetaInfo reports that audio and video calls are now being implemented in the WhatsApp Desktop application. Unfortunately this appears to be a very limited release for now, and the buttons are also getting beta labels according to the insider.
However, people who have received the feature should be able to see the buttons in the chat header, next to the search icon. See an initial image of the feature below.
You’ll still need your phone to be connected to the desktop app as you would expect, but presumably incoming and outgoing audio or video will be routed through your computer. Hopefully you will be able to use third party microphones and cameras as well.
Have you received video and audio call functionality in WhatsApp Desktop? Then let us know in the comments below! Otherwise, you may need to wait a few weeks if you haven’t received it yet.
