WhatsApp have features disappearing messages where users can send messages that will disappear automatically after a certain time. Now, WhatsApp plans to increase the duration of disappearing messages by up to one year.
The longer duration of these disappearing messages was discovered by WABetaInfo. Currently this option is still in the development stage so it is not yet available for beta testers or general users.
Currently, the disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp offers three duration options, namely 24 hours, seven days and 90 days. However, with the latest development, WhatsApp has increased the duration to 15 choices, as quoted from WABetaInfo, Wednesday (29/3/2023).
WABetaInfo uploaded a screenshot showing this big change. In the disappearing messages settings section there is a ‘More options’ menu under the default 90 days, seven days and 24 hours.
If this drop down menu is clicked, the user WhatsApp can choose the duration of the message disappear according to 15 new options, namely one year, 180 days, 60 days, 30 days, 21 days, 14 days, six days, five days, four days, three days, two days, 12 hours, six hours, three hour, and one hour.
Adding more duration for disappearing messages can certainly provide more control for the user. For example, the one hour duration option can be very useful for very sensitive or confidential information so that the message is not stored for long on the recipient’s device.
WABetaInfo says the additional duration for these disappearing messages is found in the app WhatsApp for desktops. Even so, this feature is confirmed to be present on WhatsApp for Android and iOS.
Because it is still in the development stage, it is not yet known when the option for the duration of disappearing messages of up to one year will be launched. Even before this feature was launched, it still had to go through the beta testing stage.
