WhatsApp Introduces HD Image Sharing Feature

WhatsApp flips a switch that allows users to send higher-quality “HD” images on the messaging platform. “Photo sharing on WhatsApp just got an upgrade,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Meta Broadcast channel on Instagram. “Now you can send in HD.”

The feature is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, allowing users to use this feature to send higher-quality, higher-resolution images (probably still compressed from the original) from Android, iOS, or the web, and recipients on any platform they see can do so a small symbol that indicates this. According to Meta, HD video support is coming soon.

Once users get the new feature, when adding an image to a message thread, they will see an “HD” gear icon, as first seen in beta versions shared in screenshots of WABetaInfo. The publication noted that the beta testers feature was first available in version 23.11.0.76 for iOS and version 2.23.12.13 for Android.

In the example shown by WABetaInfo, After tapping the HD icon, the Photo Quality menu will appear. Two resolution options are available: Standard Quality (1600 x 1052) and HD Quality (4096 x 2692). Meta didn’t provide details on how compressed the images will be overall and how they will compare to sending images via Apple’s iMessage or another competing platform. The same WhatsApp standards for end-to-end encryption also apply to the higher-quality images.

On slow connections, recipients have the option of either keeping the standard quality version or upgrading to HD. Also, the default transmission quality for senders remains the default setting, delaying the inevitable need to free up space in your phone memory after receiving too many pictures in group chat.
