WhatsApp introduces a useful feature to manage bothersome conversations.

Practical update for WhatsApp: A new button makes it possible to quickly mute chats. However, the function is not available on all smartphones.

Almost every WhatsApp user should be familiar with the problem: some of their own contacts are a bit too committed to sending messages – one banal message follows the other. However, one does not want to or cannot remove the overzealous sender from the contacts.

What WhatsApp users could previously only change in a number of steps and in connection with time expenditure can now be controlled more quickly. After the 2.23.5.78 update that was carried out a few days ago, Messenger now offers a function with which annoying contacts can be easily muted. However, the feature can only be used by owners of smartphones that use an Android operating system.

How to mute a chat on WhatsApp

The option to mute contacts works via the new “Mute” button. This becomes visible in the notification window as soon as you are informed that you have received a new message. It’s there next to the “Reply” and “Mark as read” buttons.

Anyone who has not deactivated the display of their online status can also mute their contacts without being noticed. Contacts then do not see that you were online and could have read the received messages.

Before the WhatsApp update, contacts could only be muted in the app within the chat via the contact information – or by long-pressing a contact’s name and then clicking the crossed-out speaker icon.

Another innovation in status reporting

There is another innovation for WhatsApp users who send status messages to their contacts: the voice memo. If you want to share a status message via audio, proceed as follows:

  • Open the Status tab and tap the pencil icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  • A green microphone symbol also appears in the window for creating a status message that is now open.
  • Record your voice memo by long-pressing the microphone icon.
