WhatsApp instead of X: First police authority leaves Twitter successor | NDR.de – News

Status: 30.08.2024 13:43

Osnabrück is the first police department in Germany to leave the platform X, formerly Twitter. All accounts of the police stations from Osnabrück to East Frisia will be deleted.

In the future, the police department says they want to inform citizens via WhatsApp channels. This will be comprehensive, fast and direct. According to the police authority, there are several reasons for the withdrawal of X. Communication and user behavior on the platform have changed, said the president of the police department, Michael Maßmann. “We expect the change to give us an even greater reach and many satisfied and well-informed users,” said Maßmann. According to the police, the change has nothing to do with criticism of the controversial X owner Elon Musk. With X, the reach cannot be limited to individual regions, according to a police spokesperson – this is what they want to achieve with the WhatsApp channels.

Switch to WhatsApp from September

Each of the four police stations of the Osnabrück Police Directorate will have its own WhatsApp channel from September 1st. These are the Osnabrück, Emsland/Grafschaft Bentheim, Leer/Emden and Aurich/Wittmund stations. The police have already published QR codes for joining these channels. They will then be used to distribute current reports on demonstrations, events and other major operations, for example. Wanted notices and calls for witnesses will also be published. The authority will also continue to use other social media, such as Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Around 1.5 million people live in the area of the Osnabrück Police Directorate.

Other municipalities also want to turn their backs on the platform. Reason: more and more hate and fake news – and fewer users. (18.10.2023) more
