TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – WhatsApp has rolled out a new privacy setting that hides the status ‘last seen‘ users from other people who don’t know or have never existed chatit in that application. Previously, WhatsApp made the feature active automatically default for ‘Everyone‘, allowing everyone on WhatsApp to be able to see the status of other users.
This WhatsApp update limits the appearance of the status to only people who have been added by the user to be able to view and change the feature set automatically default to ‘My Contacts’.
The new settings were among others revealed in a post on Twitter last Tuesday, December 7, 2021. One user explained the update to another user who questioned that he could no longer see the status ‘last seen‘ others even though the app seems normal.
It is explained that users will no longer be able to see other people’s statuses. Explanation includes a email which appears to be from WhatsApp.
“We’re making it more difficult for people you don’t know and haven’t had a chat with to see their status last seen and online on WhatsApp,” the email reads.
Previously, WhatsApp had provided the option ‘My Contacts‘ for status ‘last seen‘, but not be default. It’s also important to note that WhatsApp already has a ‘Nobody’ option in there which can prevent all users from seeing the status of other fellow users.
Status on WhatsApp lets others know when was the last time you online, or whether you are currently using the application. This feature can be useful for tracking friends or relatives, or vice versa, but WABetaInfo points out that several third-party apps are exploiting the feature.
Those apps can collect the status of a number of users, which allows them to keep a little closer eye on other people who are users on the same platform.
Enable option ‘My Contacts‘ prevents third-party apps from doing that because they don’t consider them to be part of your contacts, and therefore won’t be able to see your status.
That’s not the only change WhatsApp has made to status’last seen‘. Last November, WABetaInfo discovered that the messaging app owned by Meta—the parent of Facebook—is also starting to test an option called ‘My Contacts Except…‘ This option makes the user hide his status even from some people in his contacts.
WhatsApp also seeks to enhance user privacy by introducing the option to make the disappearing message feature default.
