Today, WhatsApp is rolling out a new disappearance feature for photos and videos. Users can send “View Once” photos and videos through the messaging app and the recipient will only be able to view them once.
The functionality was actually tested as early as the end of June.
For example, you can send a Show Once photo of new clothes you try on in a store, a quick reaction to a specific time, or something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password.
The way it works is a lot like Instagram. The recipient must press the “Photo” or “Video” button to view the image or video. Once closed, the video or image will no longer be accessible.
Committed Note that the help article for the new feature warns that recipients can still take screenshots or record their screen while opening a View Once photo or video. Additionally, WhatsApp will not notify the sender when the image has been captured or saved. View Once media will not be visible to WhatsApp as it is sent with end-to-end encryption. If the content is flagged, however, WhatsApp will be able to view the content.
