The company is currently testing camera effects in the app, a feature that promises to bring more creativity and fun to user interactions. According to recent reports, WhatsApp beta version 2.24.20.20 for Androidavailable on the Google Play Store, introduces a new filter button in the camera interface.

This addition allows users to apply various effects directly to their photos and videos with a simple tapexpanding the previously introduced call effects and AR (augmented reality) filters.

WhatsApp improves its app’s camera with visual effects

This new feature is a significant improvement over the effects exclusive to video calls, and now puts these creative tools within reach of everyone who shares photos and videos on a daily basis. Users can expect a wide range of options, including: skin-smoothing filters, perfect for selfies, and the ability to change or blur the background, a feature previously limited to video calls.

WhatsApp is moving closer to its Meta siblings, Facebook and Instagram, which have long offered similar camera effects. While currently available to a limited number of beta testers, the camera effects are expected to roll out to more users in the coming weeks. This phased approach allows WhatsApp to refine the feature based on early user feedback before a full launch.

Apart from camera effects, WhatsApp is exploring other new features. One of them is the ability to tag contacts in status updates, in order to bridge the gap between messaging and social media features. This feature could improve user engagement and interaction within the app. Additionally, WhatsApp is working on tools to help users combat spam, which addresses a long-standing problem for many users.
