WhatsApp dramatically increases file size limit on transfers

During the same week that it launched emoji reactions and started releasing communities in some parts of the world (not Brazil), WhatsApp also significantly increased the file size limit for uploading. The messenger now accepts files up to 2GB while maintaining end-to-end encryption.

The increase is considerable considering that previously this limit was only 100 MB. The novelty, however, is being rolled out gradually worldwide and may take a few days to reach all users. A counter indicating the remaining transfer time has also been added.

“We believe that this new threshold will be very useful for collaboration in small businesses and school groups. We recommend using Wi-Fi to send large files. Additionally, a timer will appear when you upload or download files, so you know how long it takes for the transfer to complete,” the company said in the announcement.

In addition to the increase in the size limit for file transfers, groups within the platform can now have up to 512 participants, double the current 256, however, this novelty has not reached the Brazil.

The reason for the unavailability of groups with 512 participants in Brazil is already an old acquaintance of WhatsApp’s Brazilian customers, the company’s long-term business strategy for Brazil. This, by the way, is the same reason for the delay in launching communities here.

Communities and groups with 512 participants must be published in the same update, which in Brazil will not be published until after the presidential elections. The first round of elections will take place on October 2, while a possible second round is scheduled for October 30, 2022.
