Muting a conversation stops notifications from being sent when you receive messages from someone. The option already exists and is mainly used for busy group conversations where several people are chatting.
No more notifications
The mute button has been in WhatsApp for some time, but could only be enabled temporarily. As a result, users had to mute conversations at least once a year if they didn’t want to receive notifications.

But that problem has since been solved. When switching on the function, you can now choose to switch off messages permanently. If you are tired of muting, the function can also be manually activated in the app.
