WhatsApp competitor Signal: Messenger optimizes functions

The messenger app Signal, here a photo of the mobile logo, taken on January 19, 2021 in Berlin, performs better than WhatsApp.

If you compare the service with WhatsApp or Telegram, Signal is considered to be more secure among the messenger apps. With a new update, some functions have now been improved.

Even though most people probably use WhatsApp instead of Signal, Threema or other less well-known messengers, many of these services already offer more advantages than WhatsApp.

Stiftung Warentest even named Signal the test winner. The service is “functionally better and technically more versatile” than WhatsApp. The non-profit consumer organization took a closer look at a total of 30 messenger apps.

As part of the Facebook company (new name: Meta), WhatsApp is the market leader, but only performed mediocre in the Stiftung Warentest. The free messenger Signal left the other apps behind. With a new update, the service has now optimized a lot.

Signal Messenger: New feature for group calls

In group calls, finding out who’s speaking isn’t always easy. Especially if you don’t know the people and their voices well. Signal has therefore come up with something.

The company has now introduced audio indicators for group calls. In concrete terms, this means that there is a new display so that you can see who is speaking or who is making the disturbing background noise, especially in the case of group calls.

This consists of dots at each contact that are animated in a wavy manner when that person speaks.

Signal Messenger: Updates initially only available for Android

However, there is a small catch: For the time being, the new audio display is only available for Android devices (from version 5.36.3) – as are the latest emojis from Signal (version 14).

However, iPhone users do not go away empty-handed. You can now also see the length of a video before sending it in the latest iOS version of the messenger (5.36.1).

Signal has a principle similar to that of Wikipedia: the service is free and is financed by “benefits and donations”. The company’s servers are located in the USA. As a result, they are bound by less strict data protection rules than in Europe, for example. (dpa, jba)
