WhatsApp can now read voicemail messages up to 2x speed

WhatsApp has been in the news a lot lately.

In January, the app’s updated terms of service seemed to suggest that parent company Facebook would soon be getting sensitive data from your conversation. However, this turned out to be wrong – in reality very little will change. Then, last week, a viral post suggested that anyone could add anyone else to group chats without their permission. Again, this was completely wrong.

However, this latest news is undoubtedly positive. The messaging app introduces a new feature for voicemail messages, allowing you to read them faster than they were recorded. This is especially useful if you’ve received a voicemail message that lasts several minutes, but you don’t have time to listen to it in peace.

How to check which version of WhatsApp you have

The feature is added in WhatsApp version 2.21.100 – here’s how to check which version you are using:

On ios

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. In the lower right corner, tap “Settings”
  3. Choose ‘Help’
  4. Your current version of WhatsApp will be displayed at the top of the screen

On android

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner
  3. Choose “Settings”
  4. Tap on “Help”, then on “Application information”
  5. Your version number will now be displayed

WhatsApp is just starting to roll out the update now, so it might take a few days before you can download the new version. Once installed, you can play voicemail messages at 1.5x or 2x its usual speed. Just press the button to the right of the one you are playing.
