Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart reminds Telegram users. According to him, the application made by Pavel Durov was not safe.
He conveyed the warning referring to Wired’s article entitled ‘The Kremlin Has Entered the Chat’. In one of his threads, Cathcart explained that Telegram is not secure because it does not support end-to-end encryption security features by default.
He also cited an article which stated that Telegram could share all classified information with the government.
“Telegram is not encrypted end-to-end (end-to-end encryption) by default and does not exist for groups. From the article: ‘Telegram has the capacity to share almost all classified information that the government requires’,” he explained, quoted Thursday (16/2/ 2023).
Furthermore, according to him, there is a potential for chats on Telegram to be tapped. “The end-to-end encryption protocol has no independent verification. So secret chats on Telegram that are said to be safe can be intercepted by third parties.”
It didn’t stop there, Cathcart also attacked Telegram’s API. This includes accusations of building another API to be able to carry out mass surveillance by accessing user content.
Cathcart also cited Telegram’s Privacy page and questioned the platform’s claim that it had never submitted user data to the government. Because according to him the opposite happened, referring to the news report.
“So why do they keep claiming this?” asked Cathcart.
At the end of the thread, Cathcart understands that there will be many people who question the critics on Telegram. He explained that there are many message platforms with end-to-end encryption features to choose from.
Therefore, you don’t need to always use WhatsApp. But he strictly forbade using Telegram.
“I’m aware that some people will say I’m interested in criticizing Telegram. But there are plenty of messaging apps to choose from. If not using WhatsApp, use one of them, don’t use Telegram,” said Cathcart.
