Whatsapp, beware of the profile picture scam

The WhatsApp profile picture is carefully chosen to show who we are, but in some cases it could help for a scam

Whatsapp it is the most used instant messaging application and for this reason it hides many pitfalls. The secret lies in using it with cunning, without falling into the deception that is easily found. There are many scams you could stumble upon using the application owned by Facebook & Co. and therefore of the American entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg.

An even bigger problem arises the moment the unwitting scammers could be you. It sounds weird, but that’s just what could happen with the highly accurate profile picture you chose. Many scammers easily steal other people’s profile pictures to use them and do some cheating.

With the lockdown and the resulting crisis, the number of scams of this kind has increased disproportionately, so much so that it is also of particular concern to the postal police to which this type of online action is reported. Unfortunately, as it should be, most of us have a photo of our own as a WhatsApp profile image – or in any case with friends, family – which can be easily stolen, even from contacts not in the address book.

The purpose of stealing this type of photo is to scam people via instant messaging application by putting your face on it. Sometimes they pretend to be you and say they have changed their number, other times they simply steal a piece of identity. A despicable gesture, in bad taste that can often cause big problems. To avoid any such situation, it is possible to go to the Whatsapp settings, both from devices iOs that Android, then Account – Privacy – Profile picture and set the item ‘My contacts’.

  1. A lady I chat to began on LinkedIn and she suggested to change to WhatsApp. She sent me a photo of herself on a roadside but a background panel has been purposefully blurred. I find this rather sneaky and unfair. Please, can you help me to unblur the sign in easy methods. I would appreciate your help.
