We already wrote that the European Commission (EC) announced on September 6 which companies will be subject to the new European Union Digital Markets Act, which aims to ensure fair competition online. Among the named technology giants, of course, there is also “Meta”, whose service “WhatsApp” will also have to follow the principles of fair competition and ensure interoperability with third parties. More specifically, in this case, third-party messaging options should be provided. It is reported that WhatsApp has already taken up this task and is working on a cross-platform messaging feature.
“WABetaInfo” informs that the latest beta version of “WhatsApp” offers a new section “Third-party chats” (in English “Third-party chats”), which will later provide cross-platform messaging capabilities, such as communication between WhatsApp and Telegram users.

Companies named by the EC have six months to implement the necessary changes and comply with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act. This means that starting in March 2024, Meta must ensure that WhatsApp works with other third-party messaging apps such as Signal and Telegram. This will allow users of these apps to communicate with people on WhatsApp even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account. WABetaInfo points out that even with this type of communication, the correspondence will still be completely encrypted.
