WhatsApp: According to Stiftung Warentest, you should change 3 settings

  • Stiftung Warentest recommends that you change three settings on Whatsapp to protect your privacy.
  • This includes the anonymization of your profile picture and the abolition of the read receipt.
  • You should also deny access to your photos and videos.

Stiftung Warentest took a closer look at the popular messenger Whatsapp and recommends users to change three settings to better protect privacy.

The profile picture

The first steps in setting up Whatsapp include inserting the name and creating a profile picture. What many people don’t know is that anyone with the user’s phone number can see this image. However, this can be changed.

For that you first have to settings call and then up Account and privacy click. There you choose the point profile pic and you have three options to choose from: “Everyone“, „my contacts” or “Nobody“. The field “Everyone‘ displays the image for everyone. Stiftung Warentest recommends the settings “my contacts” or “Nobody“.

“Last Online”

If you don’t want everyone to be able to see when you were last online, you should put that in your settings to change. For this you have to fill in the fields “Account and privacy” to choose. There you will find the rider “Last Online”. You can from there “Everyone” on “My contacts” or “Nobody” switch

The read receipt

If you receive a message from one of your contacts, different check marks will appear behind it. Their number and color is crucial because they send different messages to your contact. A gray tick means the message has been sent. Two gray ticks mean the message has arrived. Two blue ticks mean the recipient has read the message.

If you don’t want to send a read receipt, go to the settings, Account, privacy and deselects the read receipt there. This means that blue ticks no longer appear for the recipient after you have read the message.

Stiftung Warentest also recommends that you withdraw Whatsapp’s permission to track your location or have access to your photos or videos.
