Ryan Reynolds had a “complicated” relationship with his father. The 47-year-old actor lost his dad, James Reynolds, 74, in 2015, but believes his own experience of fatherhood has helped him close that painful cycle.

Ryan Reynolds had a complicated relationship with his father

The Hollywood star – who shares James, nine, Inez, seven, Betty, four, and Olin, whose birth was announced in February 2023, with actress Blake Lively – told People magazine: “I think most men and boys have a complicated relationship with their father, but I also think the healing for me or closure around my father actually comes more through my relationship with my own children.”

Ryan’s father had Parkinson’s for nearly 20 years, but the actor remembers him as an “incredibly upright” man.

The film star – who has been married to Blake since 2012 – added: “He was not lying. He had a very impressive moral and ethical compulsion and compass.”

Despite this, Ryan also recognized some of his father’s bad traits.

Reynolds revealed that the disease was rarely discussed in his family, which lived in Vancouver. “He said the word ‘Parkinson’ maybe three times, as far as I know, and one of them was not to me,” the actor said. “There was a lot of denial and hiding.”

James Reynolds, who was a boxer and policeman, was a “man who didn’t share his feelings.” Ryan recalled that although his father was always present at important events, such as his football games, he didn’t have the ability to express his emotions. “He was a present father, he never missed a football game, but he just didn’t have the ability to feel, or at least share, a little bit of the whole spectrum of human emotions,” he reflected.

“Now that I’m older, I look back and think about it more as my unwillingness at the time to meet him where he was,” she admitted.
As a father of four young children, Reynolds has a new perspective.

The ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ star – who is now one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors – said: “He always pushed me to do the right thing at the right time, even though he made a tremendous amount of mistakes, he wasn’t a great communicator. But I screw up all the time, and we all do. It’s funny how our fathers are supposed to be infallible. So I feel like part of that process and part of that journey is with my own children… I have to fill in those little gaps that maybe hurt me in regards to my own father.”
