NEW YORK – The falling rain isn’t going away anytime soon.
If you weren’t prepared, Tuesday’s cold morning was quite a shock to the system. Morning temperatures are in the 30s and 40s against most of us.
New York City recorded its coldest morning since late April, while parts of Dutchess and Ulster County dipped below freezing, some even waking up to temperatures in the 20s. And this is not the only cold morning this week. In fact, Wednesday morning is probably the coldest time of the week.
Tuesday morning’s low will be slightly cooler, and the low in Central Park is expected to be 42 degrees, which is not a record, but still cold for this time of year.
A northwesterly wind has worsened the low temperature. Monday’s wind gusts exceeded 50 miles per hour. Strong winds will continue through the week, but larger gusts in the 20-25 mph range. However, that will be enough to give us a good breeze, which you will definitely feel during the night.
Winds won’t be as strong on Wednesday, but gusts over 20 miles per hour are still expected, making it feel much colder outside.
In mid-October, the average overnight low temperature in Central Park hovers around 50 degrees. Through Thursday, the average temperature will be about 10 degrees cooler than that, closer to what we would expect for mid-November. That said, if you haven’t already, it’s time to put on a thicker jacket.
These cold temperatures will only last a short time, but while they last frost watches and frost warnings will be in place for the next two mornings. If you still have plants growing outside, watch out for “tender” vegetation and be prepared to mulch or bring them indoors if you’re hoping to extend the growing season a little longer.
As far as the average first frost goes, early to mid-October is when we would expect to see sub-freezing temperatures in parts of the northern and western Hudson Valley, which is exactly what we saw. Tuesday morning.
Most of New Jersey remains above freezing until late October. As you approach the New York metropolitan area and across Long Island, that first frost usually waits until November. In Central Park, the average weather is November 13.
Temperatures will begin to rise later in the week. After a cold Thursday morning, we will see a steady increase over the weekend.
In fact, high temperatures on Saturday will be around 70 degrees again, where they will stay for most of next week.
