What’s the US? Biden blocks UN Security Council on Israeli-Palestinian Peace

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) reportedly blocked a joint statement by the UN Security Council calling for an end to Israeli-Palestinian violence. This is the third time something similar has been done by the President’s Country Joe Biden.

This has triggered a new closed meeting which is planned to be held again this Tuesday (18/5/2021). “The US indicated they could not support that statement,” a diplomat reportedly said AFP.

The joint statement by the UN Security Council was drafted by China, Tunisia and Norway. The manuscript has been submitted since Sunday evening for approval at a closed meeting held by 15 members of the DK, Monday.

The US move comes as Israeli jets continue to hit the Gaza strip. The death toll from the week-long violence has surpassed 200.

The UN Security Council has held a total of three meetings to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian ‘war’ since May 10. But all in vain with the US, Israel’s close ally, accused of obstructing another DK effort.

In detail, the latest text of the Security Council which was annulled by the US called for a reduction in tensions, an end to violence and respect for international humanitarian law. Including the protection of civilians including children.

The statement voiced grave concern at what is happening in Gaza. Including very serious concerns at the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem due to unilateral Israeli actions which may further increase tensions in the future.

The draft text also voices support for a two-state solution. There must be negotiations that allow Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully within safe and recognized borders.

Meanwhile, Biden’s administration insisted they were working behind the scenes to resolve the conflict. This includes sending important diplomats to the region.

“We are not getting in the way of diplomacy,” stressed Biden.
