Johnson & Johnson vaccines against COVID-19 have been suspended in the European Union. This is in part the result of pressure from South Africa, which highlights the enormous problem with the African pandemic. In many countries there are still no immunization campaigns. The concern assures that the interruptions in deliveries to Europe are temporary.

1. Johnson & Johnson suspended shipments of vaccines to the EU
Implementation of the contract with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) for the supply to the EU vaccines against COVID-19 has been suspended, the representative of the African Union, Strive Masiyiwa, announced on Thursday. The vaccines produced in South Africa were to be shipped to Europe.
Doses of J&J preparations that have already reached the EU will be returned, Masiyiwa said at a press conference organized by the African Union’s disease control institution. The J&J company has so far sent less than 20 million doses to Europe, and the suspension of further deliveries was partly due to the intervention of the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last month said he was “amazed” by the deal as vaccination coverage in Europe is very high while vaccination campaigns have yet to be launched in many of Africa’s most vulnerable countries in the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two weeks ago, the European Commission referred to the contract as temporary, while J&J declined to comment. The American company has signed a contract with the African Union for the supply of 220 million doses of the vaccine against Covid-19, with the possibility of increasing by 180 million.

The suspension of vaccine deliveries by the J&J concern until mid-September is not good news for us. We hope that, according to the manufacturer’s declarations, it is temporary, told PAP President of the Governmental Agency for Strategic Reserves, Michał Kuczmierowski.

“Actually, from the beginning of August, supplies of Johnson & Johnson vaccines have not been delivered to us, so for the purposes of vaccination, including at mobile points, we allocate doses that we had in stock. We are also checking the possibility of exchanging with other countries for vaccines from other manufacturers” – added the president RARS.
“Such decisions are not favorable for us, but we have dealt with more difficult situations more than once. We have a reserve of vaccines from other manufacturers that can be used in a situation of increased interest in vaccinations among Poles,” Michał Kuczmierowski, president of the Government Strategic Reserves Agency, told PAP.
He admitted that the lack of supplies of Johnson & Johnson vaccines is complicating the vaccination campaign in the field.
“Considering that it is single dose vaccine, many people in Poland spontaneously decide to take it on the occasion of a holiday trip, festivals or other such events “- he said.

“We have started to check the possibility of exchanging vaccines from other manufacturers with other countries in order to obtain Johnson & Johnson vaccines for us” – said the president of RARS. He added that this operation would probably take some time.
In Poland, 18 million 821 thousand were fully vaccinated, i.e. with two doses of preparations from Pfizer / BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca or with a single dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. 84 people – reported on Thursday on government websites. 36 million 335 thous. 572 vaccinations.
In total, 53 million 910 thousand zlotys were delivered to Poland. 230 doses of the vaccine, of which 38 million 488 thousand were scored. 580 of them.
Since December 27, last year, when vaccination against COVID-19 began in Poland, 391,290 doses were used. 14,862 adverse vaccine reactions were reported, most of them mild.
