One of the icons of Chicago is undoubtedly Cloud Gate, popularly known as The Bean, due to its particular shape similar to that of a bean, which is located in Millennium Park, in a work carried out by the Indo-British artist Anish Kapoor. . And now, for those who are looking for what’s new in NYthe monumental sculpture has its replica in the Tribeca area, in Lower Manhattan.
The original version of The Bean, was built between 2004 and 2006, weighing 98 tons and is composed of 168 stainless steel plates, welded and polished in such a way that it has no visible seams.
Kapoor’s design was inspired by liquid mercury and the sculpture’s surface reflects and distorts the city’s skyline.
And now, the plastic artist himself brought a replica of The Bean to Tribeca, albeit in a smaller version located on the outside of a jenga-shaped tower, built by the architectural studio Herzog & de Meuron y Hill West Architects.
Where to see The Bean in New York?
The sculpture is located at 56 Leonard Street, a few blocks from other attractions in the city, including the World Trade Center complex.
How was its construction?
The work took longer than projected. The work was carried out with 38 stainless steel panels, meticulously welded together, on a support frame. In total it measures almost 15 meters long and almost 6 meters high, with a weight of 40 tons.
Due to the temperature differences between its surfaces in the sun and others in the shade, the skin cracked, which after a series of obstacles finally reached its perfect completion to mark a new sculptural icon for New York.
