What’s new in iOS 17 for the Photos app?
It can recognize pets and you can save the entire screen screenshot in JPG
Apple has long shown how important it is to the development of cameras in its iPhones. However, the innovation shows not only in the hardware, but also in the software – and we don’t mean the photo application. With iOS 17, the Photos application, which allows you to view and edit captured images, received a good portion of news. What are the most interesting ones?
Artificial intelligence and pets
The artificial intelligence in the gallery already recognizes not only individual faces of people, but also pets. Just like in the past with humans, you can name each of your pets (or just dogs and cats) on your iPhone and then just let the AI do the work.
One-click cropping
A relatively inconspicuous but very practical feature is the one-click cropping. In the Photos application, open any photo and use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to zoom in to the desired crop. A button will appear at the top right, which you can use to start cropping immediately.
If you hold your finger on the “Crop” button, you get the option to adjust the aspect ratio as well: classic full screen, keep the original, wide-angle 16:9 format or square. What’s more, quick cropping works reliably for videos as well.
Games with stickers
In iOS 17, you can finally use the 3D image function (when you remove elements from a photo just by holding your finger) and turn anything in the photo into a sticker. It could be your pet, your partner making a funny face, or maybe the dish you made for lunch. You can then use the stickers in some chat applications such as iMessage.
You can then edit the individual stickers, whatever is on them. You can give them a white outline, give them a comic stylization, a 3D effect or a shine like old stickers. At the top, you can choose whether the sticker should move or remain static.
Screenshot finally in JPG
If you take a screenshot and want to take a picture of the entire page, not just the current content displayed on the iPhone display, you need to click “Full Screen” in the supported application at the top of the bar. What is new, however, is that now the image will also be saved in the gallery in PNG format. In contrast, in the past it was necessary to work with this file exclusively as a PDF.
