Ghost games, shifts, appointment collisions. What’s next in the national hockey championship? This morning, those responsible for the National League and Swiss League will face this key question at an extraordinary league meeting. The corona virus triggers a crisis summit. A few days before the NL playoffs would start. And between the quarter and semi-finals of the SL. A challenge for the decision-makers.

Ghost games are inconceivable
It is unlikely that the playoffs will start next Saturday, March 7th. Because until March 15, the Federal Council banned major events with over 1,000 people. And the original voice of the club representatives is consistent: ghost games in the most important phase of the season cannot be imagined. Both emotionally and economically. This is how NL director Denis Vaucher’s proposal will be to postpone the start of the playoff until March 17th.
–
The placement round must not be forgotten in this problem. The playoff seats are taken. But the bottom line is still which two teams have to play in the playout final. For this, Bern, Langnau, Ambri and the Lakers each play twice against each other. It says in the room that two games would have to be played before March 17 – without a spectator – in order not to get into a deadline.
–
The delicate problem: If the club representatives are fundamentally against playing in front of empty ranks, it must also be clarified whether the series is to be shortened and whether and, above all, at what point the cancellation of the championship must be considered. As well as countless follow-up questions. The most important one: who will be a master? The proposal to postpone the title decision until August is absurd. The obvious options: No master or qualifying winner Zurich. A rejection draws even larger circles. Wouldn’t there be a league qualification and therefore neither relegated nor promoted?

There are only two options for the Super League
The league plans to inform about the decisions taken at 1.30 p.m. That’s where the decision-makers in Swiss football really get going. At 2:00 p.m. representatives of the 20 Swiss Football League clubs and the top of the league meet at the Holiday Inn hotel in the Westside Center in Bern to decide what to do with professional football in the age of the corona virus. Two scenarios are conceivable if one assumes that no event with more than 1000 visitors may be held until March 15th. But after that.

First option: The two rounds that fall in the time of the event ban are postponed to the time after. It is about rounds 25 and 26. Because the 24th round has already been postponed, three rounds would have to be made up. In addition, the cup quarter-finals from this week, in fact, four dates have to be found. The scope is extremely tight. Rounds on European Cup match days would be conceivable, even if Uefa basically forbids it. But the Premier League has already done so, fouting about the lack of Ufa solidarity payments in such a case. As is known, money is not an issue there. In Switzerland it is. But League CEO Claudius Schäfer is certain that, given the special circumstances, a solution would be found with Uefa. In addition, you could push the barrage back and with it the Super League. But on May 31st it should be over, because because of the euro the players have to be parked for the national teams from June 1st. In extreme emergencies, three game days a week are conceivable. Like in the regular ice hockey playoffs.
Second option: The next two rounds are played as ghost games. “That would almost be a worst-case scenario,” says Schäfer in the “Sonntagszeitung”. “At a Super League club, match earnings make up 30 to 40 percent of the budget.” Meanwhile, for the pay-TV channels ghost games can also be quite interesting, it looks different at the clubs. «And these are our members. They have big financial questions. » Quintessence Schäfer: “There is a risk that several ghost games can drive Swiss clubs to the brink of ruin.” Or even more …
