What Would Happen if the Sun Rises from the West? NASA Responds to Viral Claim.

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaThe sun rising from the east and setting in the west is a routine that can be seen every day. What would happen if the condition suddenly reversed?

Some had viral a post on Facebook that said the sun would rise from the West.

In a Thai-language upload that has gone viral on Facebook since January 14, 2021, NASA wrote that the Sun will rise from the west caused by the Earth’s rotation in the opposite direction.

NASA opened its voice regarding a claim that the sun rises from the west. The agency said it had never issued predictions about the claim.

“Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization predicts the sun will rise from the west,” said Bettina Inclan, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Communications.

NASA never predicted that it would happen on earth, but it is different with Earth’s neighboring planet, Venus.

It is known that the sun on Venus rises from the west, because it rotates from east to west or clockwise. In general, the planets in the solar system rotate the same as the earth, following the movement of the sun. Only Venus and Uranus are in the opposite direction.

One of the most popular hypotheses states that the previous rotation of Venus and Uranus was the same as that of the earth, so that the sun also rises from the east. But at one point it was hit by a large object, possibly another planet, so that its rotation was changed.

Several studies were conducted to find out why the sun rises from the west on Venus. One of the journals published in 2021 said that the rotation of Venus, which was previously the same as Earth’s, slowly began to slow down, until it finally became almost static before turning around, as reported by Science Alert in 2016.

This explains why the rotation of the planet is so slow. If on earth the rotas time is one day then on Venus it is 243 days.

Interestingly, if the earth around the sun in 365 days, on Venus only 225 days.

Until now, why the sun Venus rises in the west is not 100% certain, and whether it can happen on earth, as previously mentioned NASA and other scientific organizations have never made this prediction.

However, some scientists have tried to simulate what would happen if the earth’s sun rises from the west.

Florian Ziemen, co-creator of the simulation and several researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany said that in general, if the sun rises from the west, the earth will be greener.

Wind patterns will change, as well as temperature to season.

“The simulation is carried out by reversing the Earth’s rotation, retaining all the main characteristics of topography such as size, position of continents and oceans, while creating a completely different set of conditions for the interaction between circulation and topography,” said Ziemen, as reported by Livescience, April 2018 then.

The result is that in addition to a greener earth, global desert coverage has shrunk by about 16 million miles to 12 million miles. The former desert will be covered with grass half, and part with woody plants.

Not only that, deserts will appear in the southeastern United States, Brazil, Argentina and northern China.

“Seeing the Sahara turning green on our model got me thinking about the reasons why there is a Sahara desert today and why it isn’t there when the sun rises from the West. This basic idea fascinated me about this project,” said Ziemen.
