In the spring, compatible devices should be able to use WiFi 6E in France. Concretely, what is the use of this new standard derived from WiFi 6 using the 6 GHz band?
From March, France should allow WiFi 6E, according to information collected by 01net. The news should soon be formalized via a decree from the Prime Minister, and the French should a priori be able to discover the 6 GHz frequency band in the spring. But what is this new standard for, and what does it bring?
WiFi 6E is very similar to WiFi 6, which is starting to become widespread on most recent devices. The “E” here stands for « Extended », since WiFi 6E indeed operates on a large number of frequencies, which in theory would allow access to higher speeds. Xiaomi has demonstrated this for example with its highly anticipated Xiaomi Mi 11, which is already compatible with WiFi 6E. In a video test, Xiaomi compared the speeds of its Mi 11 in WiFi 6E to an iPhone 12 Pro Max which is only compatible with WiFi 6, and the finding seems clear: WiFi 6E could offer up to at twice the bandwidth. Note also that, on the smartphone side, the Galaxy S21 Ultra recently announced by Samsung is also WiFi 6E compatible.

However, in Europe, certain frequency bands must imperatively be freed in order to allow the use of WiFi 6E on its devices. The 6 GHz band is in fact heavily used in France, whether it is to operate the CBTC railway signage or the microwave links of the TNT. Thus, if WiFi 6E usually uses frequencies between 5,925 and 7,125 MHz, in France, only those between 5,945 and 6,425 MHz can be used. European provisions concerning WiFi 6E also stipulate that routers using this new standard will only have to emit a maximum power of 200 mW, and only inside buildings. The goal is not to create interference with devices that already take advantage of these frequency bands.
