“What we want is for the French to be able to breathe as soon as possible”, assures Olivier Véran

As the number of patients with Covid-19 continues in France, the horizon is emerging in the country. “What we want is for the French to be able to breathe as soon as possible”, assures Olivier Véran. Asked by The Parisian, Saturday, September 18, the Minister of Health confirmed the intention of the authorities togradually ease the restrictions, where the virus circulates the least first, then everywhere in the country. “This relief could include the health pass”, he specifies.

The symbolic milestone of 50 million people who have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine was reached on Friday. Emmanuel Macron had said he was ready the day before “remove certain constraints” in “the territories where the virus circulates less quickly” without, however, giving a precise timeline.

“We are clearly on the right track. Contamination is falling by 30% per week, even though an average of 8,000 people are still infected every day”, notes Oliver Véran. “Hospital pressure is also decreasing. It is therefore too early to relax the measures. But there is therefore reason to be optimistic.”, continues the Minister of Health, stressing that “Two weeks after the start of the school year, we have not, for the time being, observed an epidemic rebound”.

In total, 8,912 patients were hospitalized on Saturday, against 9,070 on Friday, with 243 new admissions, according to data from Public Health France. In critical care services, the number of Covid-19 patients is 1,837, against 1,891 on Friday, with 68 new admissions.

The positivity rate stands at 1.6%, the lowest since mid-July, and 7,414 new cases have been confirmed in the past 24 hours. The total number of deaths since the start of the epidemic stands at 116,002, including 89,235 in hospital, with 42 deaths in the last 24 hours.
