This is what many fans have been waiting for: another story from Hunger Games. The new part is supposed to be a prequel that takes place a few years before the Hunger Games with Katniss Everdeen.
“Hunger Games”: That’s what it’s all about
The Hunger Games films are set in a dystopian future in which the so-called Hunger Games are held every year. Two people are drawn from each of the country’s twelve districts and have to compete against each other in a brutal competition. In the end there can only be one survivor.
At the 74th Hunger Games, young Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) enters the games for her sister and probably saves her life. But Katniss quickly develops from victim to hero and becomes a symbolic figure of resistance against the tyrannical government of Panem.
From bestsellers to cinema hits: The “Hunger Games” series was originally intended as a trilogy
The Hunger Games films are based on the bestselling trilogy of the same name by American author Suzanne Collins. The third – and to date last – book was split into two films.
This is the order of the Hunger Games series:
- “The Hunger Games” (2012)
- “The Hunger Games – Catching Fire” (2013)
- “The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1” (2014)
- “The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2” (2015)
The first prequel: “The Song of the Bird and the Snake”
In 2020, Suzanne Collins surprises her fans with a sequel: “The Hunger Games – A Song of Bird and Snake” is a prequel to the original trilogy and takes place more than 60 years before Katniss’ Hunger Games. This time the protagonist is the young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), who later became President of Panem. The film shows him at the beginning of his career, when he served as a mentor during the 10th Hunger Games. The prequel was filmed at the end of 2023, making it the fifth film in the “Hunger Games” universe.

“Sunrise of the Reaping”: New book announced for 2025
A year after the theatrical release of “The Song of the Bird and the Snake,” author Suzanne Collins is once again surprising and delighting fans. There will soon be a new addition to the “Hunger Games” series. As the publisher announced a few days ago, the new part will be called “Sunrise of the Reaping” and is scheduled to appear on March 18, 2025:

One thing is already clear: As with its predecessor, “The Song of the Bird and the Snake,” it will probably not be about Katniss Everdeen. Jennifer Lawrence is not expected to make a comeback in her star role.

What is the new Hunger Games movie about?
“Sunrise of the Reaping” is also a prequel. This time, however, we don’t go quite as far back into Panem’s past. This part is about the 50th Hunger Games, in which Katniss’ mentor Haymitch Abernathy (previously played by Woody Harrelson) competed for District Twelve.
Especially in the first part (“The Hunger Games – The Hunger Games”) we occasionally learn something about Haymitch’s past. What exactly happened in his games and how he was able to win them is not yet known.
What is special about the 50th Hunger Games? In honor of the anniversary, twice as many candidates have to take part in the games this year than usual. The young Haymitch Abernathy has been living happily in District Twelve so far, is newly in love and dreams of a rosy future. Until his name is drawn and everything changes in one fell swoop.
We remember: Katniss was sent into the deadly games in the first part along with her classmate Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Haymitch has to fight for survival with three familiar faces: a friend who is like a sister to him, a compulsive gambler and probably the snootiest girl in town.
How does Haymitch manage to emerge victorious from a total of 48 tributes and leave the arena alive? An exciting question that we unfortunately have to wait a little longer to answer.
“Sunrise of the Reaping”: Will there also be a new “Hunger Games” film?
Yes! Shortly after the release of the new book title, author Suzanne Collins also confirmed that there will be a film adaptation. The sixth part of the “Hunger Games” series is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
As of now (October 18, 2024), there is no information about a possible cast and whether we can look forward to familiar faces from the previous films.
