The week of Easter is dedicated to the commemoration of the last days of the earthly life of the Christian savior Jesus Christ – his sufferings, death on the cross and burial.
Today is Holy Tuesday – the second day of Passion Week, which is the last of Jesus’ life.
Holy Tuesday is a day for teachings, moral instruction and for donations to the poor and lowly in spirit during Holy Week. According to the church canon, the day is set aside for humility and instruction.
The church recalls the words of Jesus Christ, who, after driving the merchants out of the temple the day before, gave his last moral instructions, told the parable of the ten wise virgins awaiting the coming of the Lord and the parable of the talents. Christ also made prophecies about the fate of the city of Jerusalem.
The parable of the ten virgins talks about five wise and five foolish virgins. The wise had clean lamps and holy oil, and the foolish had only clean lamps. The lamps in this parable symbolize the bodies, and the oil (oil) – mercy. In Greek, “grace” is pronounced “eleos”.
At the festive matins, the consecration of the church is enhanced by the lighting of the candles and oil, when the psalms are sung about the many mercies of God to the chosen people and it is repeated many times: “may His mercy be eternal, hallelujah!”
On this day, we should get rid of everything superfluous, take the garbage out of the house.
Lay people try to do as much good as possible. Entertainment, dancing and singing are given up.
In the Slavic tradition, preparations for the festive Easter meal begin from this day.
