On Wednesday evening, Majeddin Ahskuodar was going to the shop in Kabelvåg in Lofoten, when he noticed a light in the sky.
It was 10.14 pm in the evening.
Swimming was a nightmare: – Extremely toxic
– At first I aimed the camera at the northern lights, but then suddenly another light came by, writes Majeddin to Dagbladet.
Look around
At first he thought it was a plane, but then he noticed that there was light around the object – and that it was moving quickly.
– Then I knew it wasn’t a plane. But I still don’t know what it was. In any case, it was a lovely experience, he says.
He himself thinks that perhaps the light could be from the International Space Station, or perhaps just a big star.
– But it was moving. It was not very fast, but not very slow. It took a while before it became invisible to me.
– Excited for the answer
Now he really wonders what it was he saw. Has anyone else seen anything strange in the sky?
– I’m excited to hear what it was, he says.
Experts clamor for shark discovery
Dagbladet contacted the Meteorological Institute to ask if they could find out what was causing the sky. After seeing the pictures, they have come to the conclusion that it is probably not a natural phenomenon:
– The meteorologists concluded that it is probably a rocket of some kind. There are constant launches from Kiruna, Andøya, Russia and more distant places, which may be visible in the sky, they write.
Morten Bilet from the Norwegian Meteor Network does not think it can be a meteorite either. He writes the following in an SMS to Dagbladet:
– We think it is a rocket that came from the east. It could be from Andøya, or something further away. There is no meteorite.
– 5-15 minutes
According to Norwegian Space Centre it is rare that you can see the International Space Station from Norway, because it never gets higher than approximately 52 degrees north, which corresponds to Hamburg in Germany.
– At times we can still see it from southern Norway, since it moves 400 kilometers above the ground, they write.
Unexpected find: Worth 1.6 million
On the other hand, they write that several sounding rockets are launched every year in Norway, under the auspices of Andøya Space Center in Nordland or Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard.
– These are rockets that are launched into the atmosphere for 5-15 minutes and then fall back down.
Dagbladet has been in contact with the Norwegian Space Center, which does not want to answer any of our questions. They refer to the website «Have you seen a mysterious phenomenon in the sky?».
