Transfer:

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, infected macaques can transmit the Monkey B virus to humans. The virus can be found in the saliva, feces, urine, brain tissue or spinal cord of infected monkeys. The virus can spread if someone is bitten or scratched by an infected monkey. You get the virus if you get infected monkey tissue or fluid on your broken skin, or in your eyes, nose, or mouth. A large part of the population does not come into contact with monkeys, so the risk of infection with the B virus is very low.

What are the symptoms of monkey virus infection B?

Symptoms initially include fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, and headache. An infected person may develop small blisters in the wound or on any part of their body that has been in contact with the monkey. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and hiccups. When the B virus spreads, it causes inflammation (swelling) of the brain and spinal cord that can lead to death.

Prevention and Treatment:

There are no vaccines to prevent infection with the monkey B virus. If someone is in a place where there are macaques, they should stay away so they don’t bite or scratch. Monkeys should not be touched or fed. If you have been exposed to macaques, thoroughly wash the wound or area the monkey came in contact with with soap, detergent, or iodine and rub gently for 15 minutes. Then let the water run over the wound or area for another 15 to 20 minutes. Then seek medical help immediately.
