What was the first pickup performed by GAZ?

In the history of the Soviet and Russian automobile industry, there were many prototypes that never reached the assembly line and the GAZ-2307 is one of them.

The development of the pickup began with the fact that in the 80s the demand for the Volga fell sharply, so GAZ decided to focus on the basis of the pickup sedan so that the conveyors would not stand idle. So there was a “Burlak”, a pickup truck designed to transport 700 kg of cargo. Despite the fact that the model definitely interested buyers, it never got into the series.

A little time passed, and the situation changed: the Volga became fashionable again, and the medium-tonnages, on the contrary, were no longer in demand. It was not possible to assemble Burlak on the previous conveyors, so GAZ changed course and decided to develop its own frame car with a loading capacity of 800-1000 kg, which would fill a niche under the Gazelle.

The first sample was collected in 1995 and received the designation gas 2307. From the Volga, the pickup received the front suspension, wheels, tires, rear axle and transmission. A strong miscalculation came out with the design of the car: its high cab did not look at all with small wheels and low ground clearance. The prototype was demonstrated at several exhibitions, but it did not receive approval there.

GAZ-2307 was a kind of platform on which it was possible to install a body with three opening sides, and a dump truck, make an isometric van, tank, etc. However, since the model did not find approval among the masses, all of these options did not begin to be embodied even in the form of prototypes. Later, the results of 2307 were used in the next model – the GAZ-2308 Ataman frame pickup.

Now, looking at the awkward prototype, network users are laughing. Some regretted that the model did not reach, others, on the contrary, saying that it was good that the world did not see this monster.
