What to watch this week? Cultural offer on television / Article / LSM.lv

This week, evenings without conscience can be spent on television screens. We offer a wonderful range of films and programs. This week’s selection was prepared by Eva Johansone, a member of the Kilogram Culture jury.

1. A film about a black stork

I look forward to watching the long-awaited TV premiere of “Mr. Black Stork” on December 1 at 10 p.m. It is one of the “Latvian Code” films made by director Māris Maskalāns. The film tells the story of one of the most mysterious birds in Latvia, which is not only on the list of protected species, but also chooses separate places in the forest and hidden from human eyes, and ornithologist Māris Strazda.

Maris “together” with the black stork is older than with his wife – he has been studying storks for 40 years now.

Colleagues Mari called him “Mr. Black Stork”. The film will be an observation about the relationship between Mara and the black storks.

2. The dream of mountain peaks

During a pandemic, I really miss the mountains. Recently, I smiled at the make-up shop, seeing the mountain views of the “Love Guest House” on the screen. I realized that even mountain pictures can make you happy and let you dream of traveling to the tops when the pandemic is over. If any of you are missing a snowy peak, I recommend watching the adventure film “To the Summit” on LTV7 on December 4 at 22.00.

3. Requiem for two friends

On December 5, the legendary Latvian rock band Pērkons will perform in the Latvian Television concert cycle “Concert in Studio Z”. Juris Kulakovs intended the concert as a requiem for two friends.

“Both of these talented people died tragically. Both Juris Podnieks and Klāvs Elsbergs were our friends. The concert will be a tribute to them, that’s why I call it “Requiem for our friends”, says Juris Kulakovs.

The first part of the concert will be dedicated to the outstanding director Juris Podnieks, therefore the songs performed by “Pērkons” at the Ogre stage concert on July 6, 1985 will be performed. That evening, Podnieks started filming his most famous work – the documentary “Is it easy to be young?”. The second part of the concert will feature songs by the poet Klāvs Elsbergs.

4. “Is it easy to be young?” On the 70th anniversary of Juris Podnieks

Immediately after the “Thunder” concert, at 22.00 LTV1, celebrating the 70th anniversary of Juris Podnieks, his documentary “Is it easy to be young?” (1986). It premiered in my year of birth. I’ve seen it at least five times, but it still touches me deeply. What is most surprising is how close the director has been to the personalities of the young people and how fragile he has portrayed them, with Soviet graying in the background. After the concert of “Z studija” I will definitely watch this masterpiece of Juris Podnieks!
