what to expect this week in Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur?

While the departments of the region have been placed on heat wave orange vigilance for several days, the mercury will still be high this week.

It will still be very hot in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur this week. While temperatures have relatively dropped in the rest of the country, the region remains very prone to high temperatures. All the departments are still placed in heat wave orange vigilance by Météo-France this Monday.

In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, this vigilance was put in place on July 15, ten days ago. The Hautes-Alpes have been affected since July 16, the Alpes-Maritimes on July 17, the Bouches-du-Rhône on July 21 and the Var on July 22.

Above 30°C

The situation will not improve in the days to come. This Monday, Météo-France predicts 29°C at the best of the day in Nice, 32°C in Toulon or 34°C in Marseille. The mercury will be even higher inland with 36°C in Forcalquier, 37°C in Gap or 38°C in Gonfaron.

Temperatures will generally be above 30°C all week in the South-East: it will be 37°C in Draguignan on Tuesday, 35°C in Istres, 31°C in Briançon and Cannes or 30°C in Barcelonette. Thursday, 33°C are expected in Digne-les-Bains, 34°C in Aix-en-Provence, 30°C in Nice or 33°C in Saint-Tropez.

Records broken

Since the start of the summer season, the entire Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region has been affected by high temperatures. After an “exceptionally hot” month of May, June was the second hottest since 1973.

Overall, the first half of summer, from June 1 to July 15, is the hottest ever observed in the region since observations began in 1947, according to Météo-France. The average temperature was slightly more than 3°C above normal over this period, whereas in 2003, this difference was less than 3°C.

This rise in temperatures also concerns the Mediterranean Sea, the western part of which is particularly hot for the season.
