The news is not only mentioned by Gurman, but also by magazine sources MacRumors or 9to5Mac. Apple should just want to try to bring the smart home to life with a product that combines Apple’s ecosystem, artificial intelligence, and a smart display. So far, this segment is actually only penetrated by HomePod and HomeKit. Apple’s Smart Home Display should work similarly to the iPad, but it should have a more affordable price and relatively limited features.
The form factor is discussed a lot. The screen will still be pancake-shaped, so it should clearly resemble today’s iPads. However, there is room for a dock, which may or may not have an arm, as well as to support the HomePod’s capabilities. The screen is unlikely to run on iPadOS and have a full-fledged operating system.
