“What to do when your engine oil level is low while driving – Expert advice”

During the trip the emergency oil pressure light started flashing. And in the trunk (luckily!) there is no tube of spare oil to top up. An expert explained what should be done in such a situation.

Where does the oil go?

Even a new motor can consume intensive oil.

Remember the main reasons for burning engine oil:

– design features (reduction, overcharging);

– severe working conditions (off-road, mountain roads, driving with high loads);

– improper maintenance (oil with the wrong viscosity, poorly installed oil filter).

In an old car, increased oil consumption can be due to wear of parts such as pistons and segments, malfunctions in the crankcase ventilation system, leaking gaskets.

Below the minimum – how far can you go?

Even with a minimum oil level, driving is undesirable, because this increases the frequency of its circulation and it begins to degrade more intensively.

If the oil on the dipstick is below the MIN mark, it is dangerous to continue driving. The oil pump will begin to absorb air from time to time, the parts will work in dry friction conditions and wear more intensively.

In addition, the temperature of both the oil and the engine will rise.
