SNOW AND ICE PLAN 2024-25 – The Municipality’s Public Works and Mobility Sector manages the operations.
From 18 November 2024 until 31 March 2025, the snow clearing and anti-icing activity service relating to the roads under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Ferrara will be active. The service includes preventive salting activities of predetermined critical points of municipal roads including pedestrian and cycle underpasses and specific pedestrian areas of the historic center in order to prevent the formation of surface ice.
In this period, a service management center was established at the headquarters of the LL.PP. in via Marconi 39 which will monitor the climate trend and give operational instructions to the Temporary Business Group which will make available up to 25 vehicles equipped with salt spreading equipment and snow plow blades.
In the event of a snow event, the municipal operations center will monitor the activity of the vehicles also via a GPS system which will have the task of keeping the main roads in the area accessible during the snow event and at the end of the same they will proceed with the clearing of the remaining roads.
Please remember that pursuant to art. 13 of the Urban Police Regulations, all citizens are asked to collaborate in the activities of clearing snow from sidewalks and porches along the entire front facing the relevant buildings at the end of the atmospheric phenomenon by piling it up at the edge of the sidewalk on the road shoulder. Finally, we remind you that in times of frost, the spreading of water on public land is prohibited (art. 15)

THE SNOW PLAN – The plan, prepared by the Municipality of Ferrara, provides for different levels of intervention in relation to the characteristics of the meteorological situation to be faced. Each snowfall is evaluated based on temperature, degree of humidity, presence of wind and rain. The Municipality of Ferrara, also upon indication of the Emilia-Romagna Civil Protection, will evaluate and activate the most appropriate action, keeping the meteorological situation monitored for the entire period of the event. Furthermore, it will operate – in synergy with the other competent bodies and institutions – to prepare interventions that ensure the smooth functioning of the city’s public activities. The Prefect and the Mayor, in case of emergency, will be able to order extraordinary measures to guarantee the safety of citizens.

IN CASE OF ICE
Preventive salting: this is carried out in anticipation of significant drops in temperature to avoid the formation of ice in particularly crucial or dangerous points for traffic. In case of very cold temperatures the treatment can be extended over the entire stretch of the main road.
IN CASE OF SNOW
Salting in the presence of snow: it is carried out on the main roads in the event of precipitation which causes the formation of a snow cover. The intervention, if necessary, can also be extended to secondary roads.
Snow removal with snow blade intervention: this is carried out on the main road in the event of heavy snowfall with the formation of a substantial snow cover. The intervention, if necessary, can also be extended to secondary roads.
Anti-ice salting: the intervention may be necessary in case of strong drops in temperature to avoid the formation of ice and is carried out with blades in combination with the snow removal service.

> Obtain salt, shovels and shovels, as usual, in DIY and building material shops, hardware stores, supermarkets, etc.
> Stock up on food supplies, especially for the elderly and people with mobility difficulties
> Do not walk in close proximity to trees. During the thawing phase, pay attention to snow falling off roofs and eaves
> Use suitable shoes
> Do not use two-wheeled transport
> If possible, park cars in garages or in any case correctly so as not to hinder the intervention of salt spreaders and snow removal vehicles
> Clean the sidewalk in front of your entrance, moving ice and snow to the edges of the road (municipal regulation)
> Bring snow chains and tires
USE OF SALT – Salt melts ice and snow if they have limited thickness, so if the snow is deep it is necessary to remove it first with the shovel. Do not use water to remove layers and piles of ice and snow, especially if salt has been spread beforehand.
