what the USSR really thought about cult films

The fans didn’t care about the feelings of the idols.

The “haters”, i.e. malicious critics, have existed in all ages. Talented Soviet actors who, it would seem, did not deserve such an attitude, often became victims of a disgruntled audience.

The sex symbol of USSR cinema Nikolai Eremenko was often the object of public attacks. He has received loads of angry letters from angry viewers. Soviet citizens “hated” the artist for the fact that he radically changed his role.

So, in the film “Red and Black” Eremenko appeared in a romantic image, and in the first Soviet action film “Pirates of the 20th century” he sharply reincarnated as a hero of American cinema. Disappointed fans and admirers were outraged at how their favorite could fall so low and tried to shame him. Their letters were filled with fans’ disappointment and grief. Be that as it may, but the bulk of the audience the film “Pirates of the 20th century” brought frantic delight. The picture broke all ratings in terms of the number of views, leaving behind such hits as “The Diamond Hand” and “Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears.”
