What the Sharks can expect in the DBBL Cup against the German champions

Basketball, Second Bundesliga South Women
BSG Ludwigsburg ?? Qool Sharks Würzburg 61:64 (30:45)

Both Würzburg basketball Bundesliga teams competed in Ludwigsburg this weekend: While the men from s.Oliver Würzburg played for the MHP Riesen on Sunday, the women of the TG Qool Sharks Würzburg were already fighting for points at the BSG Basket Ladies the day before.

This game was the expected difficult away game, writes the club in a press release, after all, the hosts had won their previous three home games against Schwabach, Weiterstadt and Speyer-Schifferstadt and were only two points behind the Sharks in the table.

Würzburg initially with many ball wins and rebounds

But at the beginning the Basket Ladies had problems with the variable defense of the Würzburg women and only scored two points in the first six minutes. However, the guests from Würzburg did not capitalize on their numerous ball wins and rebounds, which is why it was only enough for an 18:13 lead until the quarter break.

The Sharks had their best phase in the second quarter, according to the announcement, when they “repeatedly turned three-point throws from very beautiful ball relay”.

Jessica Hanson, the most accurate thrower with a total of 23 points, made four successful distance throws. And if a throw went wrong, Paula Wenemoser tidied up under the basket and hit just as reliably from all positions. So the guests already earned a comforting 45:30 at halftime.

Basket Ladies catch up to two points in the fourth quarter

In the third quarter, on the other hand, the two teams did not succeed very much, which meant that the Würzburg women took their 15-point lead with them into the last section of the game.

However, Würzburg’s trainer Janet Fowler-Michel had warned her players before the first jump ball that the Ludwigsburgs would not give up despite the arrears. They started their race to catch up with two three-pointers from Nadia Stöckle.

With a 12-0 run, led by Luzie Hegele, who played “like unleashed”, the young “Basket Ladies” were able to reduce their deficit to just two points two minutes before the end of the last quarter. Only Alexandra Daub secured the three-point lead in the penultimate minute with a converted free throw. After that, the Würzburg women would have had the luck on their side to leave the field as winners this time as well.

On Wednesday, the Sharks will play in the second round of the cup

With the away win, the Sharks defended the top of the table in the Second Bundesliga South against Schwabach (5.30 p.m.) before the preliminary rounds were concluded on next Saturday, November 11th.

This Wednesday, November 8th, the Würzburg women will continue in the DBBL Cup competition. In the round of 16 they will receive the ambitious first division team Rutronik Stars Keltern in their home hall (7.30 p.m.). In the first round they had a bye, in the second the hosts defeated the league rivals Rhein-Main Baskets with 62:59 away, while Keltern shot the second division MTV Stuttgart 101:29 out of their hall.

Ferdinand Michel, head of the basketball department at TG Würzburg, admits that the focus is on the league: “We still have four games in total this year. It would be nice if we could end it with three league wins . “

Opponent is the alternative to the Würzburg concept

The cup is “the icing on the cake,” says Michel. “You always have a minimal chance, but these are professionals who come to us very relaxed.” With just one German player in the first division squad, Keltern is the alternative to the TGW concept of offering their own offspring the opportunity to play high-class basketball.

Michel attributes the fact that the wine pressers are currently not at the top of the league but in fifth place, among other things, to their “double burden from the league and the European Cup”.

Last weekend they prevailed against the relegation-threatened Capitol Bascats Düsseldorf with 88:60. Against this opponent, first in the northern group last season, the Sharks lost in the promotion play-offs in the two legs at the end of April (66:86) and early May (75:76).

Würzburg: Dröll 3, Zimmermann 2, Böhmke 3, Jochimczyk 3, Wahl 6, Riedmann 2, Lucy Michel 1, Hanson 23/5, Muck 2, Wenemoser 14/1, Haw 2, Daub 3
