2022 ends with the Artemis 1 mission: the launch of the unmanned spacecraft Orion to the Moon.

We all love space stories, right? Well, space fans get ready to watch them more often in 2023.

2022 ends with the Artemis 1 mission, the launch of an unmanned spacecraft to the Moon.

And there will be many more rocket launches and space missions throughout the year, many of them preparing humanity for a journey back to the lunar surface.

Here we look at some of the major events that have taken place out of this world.

Mission to the Moon

Following Orion’s successful entry into lunar orbit, NASA is preparing for further missions to test equipment and perform scientific experiments and prepare for a crewed mission to the Moon scheduled for 2025.

There will be many missions underway, one of which is the launch of the first lunar lander called Noca-C and the safe delivery of five scientific instruments to the lunar Ocean of Storms region.

Developed by private company Intuitive Machines, the Nova-C lander will launch on a Space X Falcon 9 rocket in March.

The Nova-C lunar lander is packed with technology that will help scientists on Earth test instruments before any manned missions.

Radio systems, sensors and low-frequency cameras will all be tested to see how effective they are at gathering information and recording critical data for further missions.

The first Vulcan Centaur rocket will launch the Peregrine lunar lander, also part of preparations for a manned moon landing.

Equipped with five main engines to perform all spacecraft maneuvers, the lander will be used to deliver payloads to the Moon, much like a delivery truck.

Space tourism

Launching to the International Space Station (ISS), this year two separate flights will take paying travelers on a 10-day vacation around the Earth.

Well, the journey will be like being in a room looking at the landscape.

Plus, eight people have been chosen by a Japanese billionaire to join him on SpaceX’s flight around the Moon! (Although regulators in the US have not actually given permission to resume flights)!

Safely deliver cargo and people to the ISS

ISS NASA
The ISS cannot function without regular resupply missions delivering equipment and food to astronauts who stay there for months on end.

In recent years, we have seen the successful deployment of the Crew Dragon spacecraft by SpaceX, the private enterprise owned by billionaire Elon Musk, tasked with safely delivering cargo and people to and from the ISS.

And 2023 will see a NASA crew flight, so stay tuned!

But it’s not just the Dragon spacecraft carrying NASA astronauts this year. We have launched the first operational mission of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner.

The Starliner is a partially reusable spacecraft for carrying crews to the International Space Station and other low-Moon orbits, so we’ll also see it finished for the first time.

Starliner is reusable up to 10 times and packed with innovative technologies, including tablet and wireless internet.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is also interested in participating in the space action involving the launch of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer spacecraft.

The mission will require patience, as it will take EIGHT – yes, EIGHT years to get there. How old were we then?

When it finally gets there, the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer spacecraft will be tasked with exploring Jupiter and its large ice-covered moons.

All missions are expected to be completed before October, when SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy will launch a NASA exploration mission to a large metallic asteroid called Psyche.

Due to software and technology failures, this mission delayed from 2022 will not be completed until 2029.

But the spacecraft will fly over Mars until it gets there.

This is a secret

Of course we want to provide you with facts, information and knowledge. But there are some things we don’t even know.

The new branch of the American military – the US Space Force – this year detonated several secret payloads in space for reasons unknown to us… adding more mystery to the new “guardians” of the galaxy.

Much of the information about the US Space Force is “secret” and visible only to people with special access, which indicates that high-ranking US government officials do not want to reveal all their secrets.

We know that the Space Force launched the spacecraft last year and successfully completed a record 908 days of orbit.

This is just part of the mission due to launch in 2023, so stay tuned to this year’s BBC for all things ‘out of this world’.
