What Smith’s “Songs of a Darker World” reveals about the new Cure album

Robert Smith released a playlist called “Songs of a Darker World” on Spotify on Saturday (September 28, 2024) to get in the mood for The Cure’s upcoming album “Songs of a Lost World”.

„Curated by Robert Smith, this is a darker Best Of compilation from The Cure’s catalogue“, heißt es in der Playlist-Beschreibung.

Chaotic genius!

The playlist for the 14th album, which will be released on November 1st, contains 25 Cure songs and lasts 130 minutes. The tracklist tells the band’s history from 1979 to 2008 more or less chronologically.

In the order of the songs from “Seventeen Seconds” (1980), “Faith” (1981), “The Top” (1984), “The Head On The Door” (1985) and “Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me” (1987). ), Smith got a little confused. Chaotic genius!

What is striking about “Songs of a Darker World”: The playlist hardly contains any Cure singles, so hardly any hits. At least none of the pop numbers like “The Lovecats” or “Close To Me”.

The only singles are “A Forest”, “Charlotte Sometimes”, “Pictures Of You” and “Never Enough” in a maxi version. Strictly speaking, “Alone”, which conveys more atmosphere than melody (when the euphoria over the Cure comeback has subsided, you will have to admit that), is not classic single material either.

According to the reference material on the playlist, “Songs of a Lost World” could be a very dark album. Perhaps Robert Smith is also hinting at the potential setlist for an upcoming Cure tour. 25 songs from the back catalog plus eight pieces from “Songs of a Lost World”? 33 songs, a classic Cure concert length.

By the way, don’t let anyone say that Smith doesn’t like the 1996 album “Wild Mood Swings.” As he said in an interview, this is one of his Cure top 5 records. And is represented here in the playlist with two songs, “Want” and “Treasure”. And thus records one more song than the debut: “Three Imaginary Boys”.
