What Sinner risks after the wada appeal and how the ranking could change

From the Clostebol positivity to the appeal against the acquittal by the Wada (World Anti Doping Agency), we retrace all the stages of the Jannik Sinner case to understand what the tennis number one risks. Already during the US Open won by the Italian, the Agency had requested further documents on the issue from ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency).

Sinner, Wada appeals against the acquittal for doping: a one to two year disqualification is requested. Last word to the Tas. Him: “Disappointed and surprised”

What happens after Wada’s appeal: save the defeated lathes

An arbitration proceeding will be initiated before the court, which will conclude with a single ruling within five months. Wada, which asked for a disqualification of 1 to 2 years, made it known that any sanction would not be retroactive. In practice, Sinner would not lose the tournaments and prizes won from March 10th – the date of his first positive test – to today. A period in which he conquered the tournaments of Miami, Halle, Cincinnati and the US Open. As for the world no. 1 position, at the moment it would be safe but clearly within a few months the blue would end up losing it.

The pro Sinner ruling

According to the Itia ruling, Sinner did not take Clostebol intentionally, given the infinitesimal quantity (less than a billionth of a gram) found in his urine. Wada would have to demonstrate that Sinner was aware of the doping risk and therefore knew that his trainer Umberto Ferrara had Trofodermin in his possession, the prohibited cream later used in Indian Wells by the physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi to treat a wound to a finger which ended up in Jannik’s body after a massage without gloves.

Contamination

But how did the contamination happen? Ferrara had purchased the drug on February 12th at the “Santissima Trinità” pharmacy in Bologna. On March 3, Naldi, while looking for something inside his work bag, suffered a wound on the little finger of his left hand, caused by a scalpel to remove calluses. In the following days the physiotherapist applied Trofodermin purchased from Ferrara to the cut, as the drug has healing and antiseptic properties. The subsequent massages given to Sinner resulted in transdermal contamination, which was decisive for the positive result of an anti-doping test during the Indian Wells tournament on March 10th. Eight days later another positive result. Sinner was provisionally suspended, but thanks to the immediate emergency appeal he obtained the immediate revocation of the suspension. On August 15th, the independent judgment of Sport Resolutions established the involuntary contamination. In short, there was no guilt or negligence on Sinner’s part. But the issue is by no means closed
