Sami Khedira and Cristiano Ronaldo played side by side at Real Madrid for five years – with the 2014 Champions League victory they celebrated their greatest success. The former German international still remembers the first conversation he had with the superstar.
He asked Cristiano Ronaldo for restaurant recommendations in Madrid, after all, he had been playing in the Spanish capital for a year longer. “We usually eat at home and do extra training shifts,” remembers Ronaldo’s answer at THE ATHLETIC. The Portuguese, Sergio Ramos and Kaka stayed longer than anyone else on the pitch.
“At the time I thought I knew what it meant to be a professional. But you were on another planet in that respect,” says Khedira. For the 2014 world champion, Ronaldo’s response at the time had an impact on his attitude and thus had a lasting impact on his entire career.

The native of Stuttgart then realized “that I have 10 hours a day to work on myself – and that I can do so much more than hang out on the sofa or by the pool”. The midfielder played over 160 competitive games during his real time.
