What really works
Scientific research shows what really works for your skin. I’m all for it. But I remain critical, even if the results are top notch. For example, a study has once again been carried out into lycopene, the substance that gives tomatoes their red colour. Again, lycopene – in this case in the form of a supplement – was found to reduce facial lines while improving firmness, texture and skin tone. Still, I have my reservations.
Pounds per day
What’s wrong, I wondered, with just eating tomatoes? So do the math. The daily supplement from the study contained 15 mg of lycopene. That means you need to eat a pound of tomatoes a day to get the same amount of lycopene. Okay, that may not be feasible. Then I wondered: do you really need that much lycopene? And guess what… that hasn’t been researched at all!
More beautifiers
What is certain: tomato is not the only source of lycopene. Rosehip and especially watermelon also contain a lot of lycopene, even more than tomatoes. Also useful to know: lycopene is an antioxidant. Antioxidants have been proven many times over to improve the skin. In addition to lycopene, there are many more similar beautifiers that help just as well against lines and sagging facial skin.
Antioxidant bombs
Another fact: your body naturally also contains antioxidants. However, the amount decreases as you get older. So it’s not a bad idea to make sure you get enough of it, partly to keep your skin healthy. But don’t be fooled by fancy advertising talk: you can easily do that without (expensive!) supplements. Choose cosmetic products with antioxidants and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables every day. These are all antioxidant bombs…
Double check
Are you afraid that you are not getting enough antioxidants? And are you considering a supplement? Then you could consider lycopene. Be wise: ask a doctor or dietician for advice in advance. Only if you double check you can be sure that your supplement is safe and fits what your body needs.
Prevention is always better…
Finally, I would like to emphasize to you: preventing free radicals in your skin is always better. The biggest cause of this is… UV radiation. The only thing that protects your skin from the damage it causes is applying sunscreen daily and moisturizing with a good moisturizer.
