What Planets in the Solar System Can Float on Water? page all

KOMPAS.com – The planets in the solar system have various features.

There are planets that are rocky, but there are also those that are mostly gaseous.

Earth is one of the rocky planets in the solar system. But there are gas giants that scientists think can float on water.

What planets can float on water?

Quoted from the page NASA, 15 April 2022, a planet that can float on water is Saturn.

Although Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, it is also the lightest planet and the only one that can float on water.

That’s because most of the elements are made of gas, which is about 75 percent hydrogen and 25 percent helium. Thus, its density is less than that of water.

In addition it is believed that humans cannot even stand on Saturn, because most of the planet is gas.

Quoted Space, November 15, 2012, the gas giant Saturn contains many of the same components as the sun.

Saturn does not have the mass necessary to undergo the fusion necessary to power a star.

Besides being made of hydrogen and helium, Saturn also contains traces of ice consisting of ammonia, methane, and water.

Unlike the rocky terrestrial planets, gas giants like Saturn do not have a layered crust-mantle core structure, because they are formed differently from rocky planets.

Saturn is classified as a gas giant because it is made almost entirely of gas. The atmosphere flows to the surface in a slightly different way.

If a spacecraft tried to land on Saturn, it would never find solid ground.

Of course, the craft would be lucky to survive long before the increasing pressure from the planets destroyed it.

Scientists think the planet’s surface begins when the pressure exceeds one bar, the approximate pressure at sea level on Earth.

At higher pressures, below the surface, the hydrogen on Saturn becomes liquid.

The closer you get to the center of the planet, the more the pressure increases. This causes the liquefied gas to become metallic hydrogen.

But Saturn doesn’t have as much metallic hydrogen as the largest planet, Jupiter. Saturn has more ice.

Like Jupiter, Saturn is thought to have had a rocky core surrounded by hydrogen and helium.

However, the question of how solid the core might be is debatable. Although it is composed of rocky material, the core itself may be liquid.

Saturn’s distance from the Sun is very significant, it keeps Saturn’s average temperature low. But it is believed the rocky core is hot as hot as 21,000 degrees Fahrenheit (11,700 degrees Celsius).
