“The message is that there is much more to all of us than our certificates and references can show us,” says Marcell Heinrich, education expert and founder of Hero Society. The Leipzig company supports young people in their search for their professional destiny. In the “Heldenmacher” program, for example, students are brought together with role models and mentors and learn important skills, such as collaborative problem solving. Heinrich also works with trainees and their superiors or young professionals. It’s always about recognizing personal talents and perceiving them as such.

Inner compass for young people
Inner orientation has always been important, says Marcell Heinrich in an interview with MDR KULTUR. But the need is higher today, because “we have the freedom to shape our own lives and are relatively secure”. The digital change in the world of work is increasing this need. There are jobs that have never existed before, that parents or career counselors don’t even know. More than ever, people are “dependent on the inner compass in life”, continues Heinrich.

Schools can provide knowledge and skills, and there is a certain degree of identity formation, but the focus is on training. This can only contribute to a successful life to a limited extent: “The misconception is that school is responsible for it,” says Heinrich. There is more to preparing for life.

What school grades don’t reveal
Anyone who leaves school with a 3 or 4 is not a life failure and whoever has a high school diploma can still be disoriented. Those who really want to become what the inner plan provides, who want to discover and develop their potential, need more than school, need the lively life in the neighborhoods, backyards, workshops, clubs, families, mentors and lots of challenges. Marcell Heinrich wrote the book “Education for Future. Education for a Successful Life” together with Gerald Hüther and Mitch Senf – published in spring 2020 by Verlag Goldmann.
