What Kind of Leader Does Indonesia Need to Become a Developed Country by 2045?

Jakarta

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, said that the average Indonesian salary must reach IDR 10 million per month so that Indonesia can become a developed country by 2045. One question remains, what kind of leader does this nation need so that this can be achieved?

Executive Director of the Sagara Research Institute, Piter Abdullah, believes that there are no specific criteria for leaders who can lead Indonesia to become a developed country by 2045. These figures could be scholars who work in government, namely technocrats, or politicians, even academics.

“Anyone can become president. They can be technocrats, they can be academics, or they can be professionals. Anyone can be, as long as they are elected by the people through fair elections,” he said, Friday (14/10/2023) when contacted by telephone.

However, according to Piter, one determining factor is that the leader can have a good line of ministers and advisors. This is necessary so that Indonesia’s various big agendas, namely becoming a developed country by 2045, are achieved.

“What will be more decisive later is how the president can choose the truly best ministers and advisors,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Center of Law and Economic Studies, Bhima Yudhistira, sees that the leader that Indonesia needs is one who is ready to carry out various economic reform agendas. According to him, the 2024 election is expected to be a momentum for implementing various economic reform agendas contained in the vision and mission and action programs of the presidential candidates.

Apart from this, an equally important factor is that legislative candidates and political parties are expected to have an urgent awareness or sense of urgency regarding the issue of people’s income. Because, this issue can be resolved if it is realized in a legislative product.

“The election is expected to be a momentum for the inclusion of various economic reform agendas in the presidential candidate’s vision and mission and action programs. It is also important that legislative candidates and political parties have a sense of urgency in raising the issue of people’s income in their campaign promises as well as legislative products,” he stressed.

Apart from this, Bhima then explained that there were a number of tasks that the government had to complete if Indonesia wanted to become a developed country. Among other things, changing the structure of the Indonesian economy which focuses too much on the extractive sector. Then, selectively provide tax incentives and non-tax incentives that are labor intensive. As well as reorienting the digital sector to connect it with other economic sectors.

According to Bhima, the government does not have much time if it really wants Indonesians to have an average salary of IDR 10 million per month or become a developed country by 2045.

“We don’t have much time,” he concluded.
