What Japan Feared, Now Happens

Tokyo

Japan be very careful when opening the door for tourists. Japan is scared tourist will lead to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Unfortunately, what Japan feared is now happening. Reported from Japan TodayThe central government is taking a cautious stance in starting a tourism promotion campaign due to the increasing number of daily cases nationwide.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida refrained from starting a tourism campaign. Kishida had previously said he would seek tourism promotion earlier this month.

“We will respond to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases with strong awareness and caution,” said Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara.

Covid-19 cases in Japan have been declining since February. But the health ministry’s panel of experts said the number of infections “has been swinging” nationwide. There was an increase from week to week, going from 29 to 47 cases in Japan’s prefecture.

“We want to closely monitor the state of the infection. We haven’t set a deadline yet,” Kihara said of the launch of the government’s tourism promotion plan.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government raised its COVID-19 alert one level to the second-highest on a four-level scale, saying infections were spreading again.

The resurgence is believed to stem from decreased immunity for many who received booster vaccine injections earlier and from the increased prevalence of the highly contagious BA.5 omicron variant.

“We are monitoring closely how much momentum the coronavirus has,” a government source said.
