Vitiligo is one of the diseases that some people suffer from and causes a change in skin color in some parts of the body. It is an autoimmune skin disease.

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo It is a skin condition in which the skin loses its pigment, and this autoimmune disease causes the skin to appear in the form of white spots, usually on the hands, forearms, feet, and face, and the white spots usually enlarge over time and can also affect the hair and the inside of the mouth.

This condition occurs when the melanocytes in the skin that make pigments are attacked and destroyed, and this makes the skin appear white without any color.

What are the symptoms of vitiligo?

People start to see white, discolored patches in small areas and eventually grow if not controlled. The hair in the area affected by vitiligo turns white and begins to lose pigmentation.

While the exact cause of vitiligo is not known, there is a strong connection between genetics and family history. Besides, external factors such as sunburn, emotional distress, and exposure to chemicals can trigger or even aggravate this condition.

What is the way to treat vitiligo?

Choosing the right treatment for vitiligo depends on the person’s age, how fast the disease is progressing, and how it affects your life. There are several medications and light therapy that can restore skin tone or even color. Narrowband ultraviolet B (UV) phototherapy has been shown to stop or slow the progression of vitiligo.

Another treatment that combines a plant-derived substance called psoralen with light therapy (photochemotherapy) helps return color to white spots.
