He served in the Roman army and attained the high rank of stratilate (general). During his service in the army, he converted to Christianity and became known for his faith among other soldiers. At that time, Emperor Maximian was persecuting Christians (around 309), Sava was arrested for his faith. He refused to renounce his faith. For this he was tortured for a long time.
